Mountainscape fence weave (2017)

The Charleston Area Alliance asked me to propose a temporary public art project using a block of chain link fence that bordered the downtown post office. I proposed a semi-permanent mural of mountains and clouds using colored fence tape that would be woven into the fence. The tape is made of Low-Density Polyethylene, color pigments, and ultraviolet inhibitors. The product comes with a 5-year warranty and with minimal maintenance, can last much longer. The mural spans the length of one city block along Leon Sullivan Way in Charleston, WV.

Located in a highly visible public space at the city's gateway just off Interstate 64, the fence mural is intended to visually improve the area, making it more pleasant for residents and businesses as well as visitors. According to the Alliance’s Vice President of Community Development, Susie Salisbury, “The Mountainscape Fence Weave Project will animate a previously lifeless public space, build community morale and become central to the identity of the neighborhood.”

This project was coordinated by the Charleston Area Alliance and funded by John and Fonda Elliot and a West Virginia Community Participation Grant.
